Magazine of the Year - Sponsored by Ovato

Judges: Lisa Morton and Lauren Quaintance

WINNER:
New Zealand Geographic / Kōwhai Media

Judges’ comment:
‘While on the face of it New Zealand Geographic has a narrower remit than some other titles in this category it is very much in tune with the zeitgeist – covering topics from natural sciences and conservation, to trends in food production and housing – providing credibility and insight at a time when we need it most. It doesn't shy away from big, important issues such as the future of farming but the great joy of the magazine is found in the smaller, serendipitous stories, the ones you could never have guessed you were going to be interested in. The writing is elegant and never jargonistic, the design is bold but never cluttered and there is an admirable investment in quality original photography. The high engagement and growth across print and digital platforms is testament to the fact that this is a magazine that resonates with New Zealanders in 2019.’
