Scholarships help journalists tackle health-related stories

nib New Zealand is once again offering $10,000 worth of health journalism scholarships for the 2019 Voyager Media Awards. The senior nib health journalism scholarship allows a grant of up to $6,000 towards travel, research and interviews. The junior scholarship allows a grant of up to $4,000.
nib New Zealand has also recommitted as a supporting sponsor of the Voyager Media Awards, New Zealand’s largest media awards.
Awards director, Jane Phare, said nib’s ongoing support as a sponsor and the two health journalism scholarships not only helped secure the future of the awards but also encouraged high-quality, health-related journalism.
“We could not run these awards without the support of sponsors like nib New Zealand. The health scholarships had enabled past recipients to travel and research subjects ranging from the stigma surrounding obesity and the efficacy of a sugar tax to organ donation, and the connection between sport-related concussion and early onset dementia,” she said.

The entry and judging criteria for the 2019 nib health journalism scholarships will be available on from December 14. Winners will be announced at the Voyager Media Awards gala dinner on Friday, May 17, 2019, at Cordis, Auckland.
nib New Zealand’s Chief Executive Officer, Rob Hennin, said nib was pleased to be able to support the Voyager Media Awards and to provide new opportunities for journalists to explore important health issues in New Zealand.

“The calibre and quality of the journalistic work of previous recipients has been extremely high, so I am looking forward to seeing what next year’s winners produce,” Mr Hennin said.
The media awards are staged by the Newspaper Publishers’ Association with Voyager Internet as premier sponsor. They attract more than 2000 entries from both print-based and broadcast journalists, photographers, videographers, designers, artists, columnists and cartoonists. The awards showcase the very best of the country’s newspapers, magazines, news websites, and broadcasting.
