Voyager Media Awards finalists announced today

More than 280 finalists in the 2019 Voyager Media Awards have been announced today, selected from nearly 2000 entries.

More than 70 judges based in nine countries have co-judged in groups of two and three for the past five weeks to select winners and finalists from thousands of pieces of work. These included print and broadcast news stories, breaking news coverage, editorial campaigns, features, reviews, opinion pieces, videos and documentaries, photographs, cartoons and graphics, headlines, newspapers, magazines and specialist publications.

Voyager CEO Seeby Woodhouse said finalists in this year’s Voyager Media Awards should feel very proud as they had been selected against a huge number of high-calibre entries. “It really is a testimony to the standard of news we’re lucky to have access to her in New Zealand.”

Awards director Jane Phare said she was heartened by feedback from the judges which showed journalism was in good shape. Comments from judges included “balanced, professional and relentless”, “tenacious reporting”, “A determination to serve public interest rather than chase headlines,” “storytelling at its very finest,” “beautifully crafted television”, and “compositional excellence and human interest was a standout for the (photographic) judges”. In the words of one judge: “ The breadth and quality of the work spoke volumes about the strength of New Zealand journalism.”

Winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Friday May 17, 2019, at Cordis, Auckland.

Tickets can be ordered online at

The awards are run by the Newspaper Publishers’ Association with Voyager Internet as the premier sponsor.
